A firm wants a check that it receives to clear as quickly as possible (so it can use the money). To reduce the number of days to clear a check, the firm opens offices, called lockboxes, in different cities to handle the checks. There is a cost to open a lockbox, and there are average annual losses calculated from interest rates and the number of days to clear a check sent from source LaTeX: i to lockbox city LaTeX: j.
