Triangular matrix

From Glossary

Jump to: navigation, search

A square matrix, LaTeX: A, is called upper triangular if all elements are zero below the main diagonal -- i.e., LaTeX: \textstyle A_{(i,j)} = 0 \mbox{ for } i > j. It is called lower triangular if its transpose is upper triangular. We sometimes call a matrix triangular if it is either lower or upper triangular.
